Rapper Cardi B and Tesla CEO Elon Musk clashed on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday over the musician’s authenticity as an advocate for the presidential candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris.
Musk mocked Cardi B’s speech at a Harris campaign event on Friday night, during which the teleprompter broke down, causing the Bronx-born rapper to struggle with ad-libbing her speech. She was then handed a cell phone containing the prepared text of her address.
Musk, who has endorsed former President Donald Trump, called Cardi B a “puppet who can’t even talk without being fed the words.” In response, Cardi B denied being a puppet, instead describing herself as a success story, overcoming poverty and welfare to achieve personal success. The Grammy-winning artist has an estimated net worth of $80 million.
Cardi B’s endorsement of Harris is not her first foray into politics. In 2019, she endorsed the bid of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders for the Democratic presidential nomination, describing him a “natural humanitarian.” In a video for the campaign, Cardi B interviewed Sanders on health care, immigration, policing, and student debt.
For his part, Musk has gone all-in on Trump. His America PAC has spent more than $130 million to support the former president’s second reelection bid. Musk has portrayed the 2024 presidential election as an existential decision for the United States. He has relocated to the battleground state of Pennsylvania to mobilize voters for the former president.
