President-elect Donald Trump made his first public statement this morning on the extraordinary advances of opposition forces in Syria, calling on the United States to take a neutral role in the conflict.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “Syria is a mess, but it is not our friend.” The U.S., he said, should have nothing to do with the war.
The incoming president’s post read in all-capitalized text: “THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!”
Focused on What’s Best For Russia
Trump also argued that Russia’s Syria intervention was not in Moscow’s interests.
Russia being forced out of Syria “may actually be the best thing that can happen to them.” Trump asserted, “There was never much of a benefit in Syria for Russia, other than to make Obama look really stupid.”
Taking Shots at Obama
Trump also took the opportunity to criticize former President Barack Obama and his inability to uphold the “red line” commitment in Syria.
In August 2012, then-President Obama warned the Syrian regime that the use of chemical weapons would invite extraordinary consequences. The Bashar al-Asad regime deployed chemical weapons against its own populace the next year — without any significant repercussions.
Trump attributed Russia’s 2015 intervention in the Syria war to Obama’s perceived weakness, writing, “This is where former President Obama refused to honor his commitment of protecting the RED LINE IN THE SAND, and all hell broke out, with Russia stepping in.”
Trump, in contrast, ordered two missile strikes in response to the Syrian regime’s use of chemical weapons. He also quickly withdrew most U.S. military personnel from Syria after declaring the defeat of ISIS.
