Stock markets in the United States will be closed on Thursday as part of a national day of mourning for the late President Jimmy Carter.
Carter, who served a single term as the 39th president of the United States, died on December 29 at the age of 100.
President Joe Biden issued an executive order declaring January 9 as a national day of mourning for Carter.
A State Funeral for Carter
The late president, whose body presently lies in state at the U.S. Capitol, will be honored with an official state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral tomorrow.
The service will begin at 10:00 AM Eastern.
In accordance with Carter’s wishes, Biden will eulogize his predecessor.
President-elect Donald Trump, along with former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama, will also attend the service, in line with tradition.
Stock Market Closures, Schedule Changes
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq’s U.S. equities exchanges, and the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) will all be closed for their trading sessions on January 9.
Bond markets will operate for reduced hours, closing at 2:00 PM Eastern, instead of the usual 5:00 PM.
CME Group’s agricultural, equity, and interest rate markets will close early on January 9.
Its U.S. equity markets will close at 8:30 AM Central, with equity options expiring that day moved to January 8.
CME Group’s interest rate and agricultural markets will close at 12:15 PM Central, while BrokerTec U.S. Treasury and Repo products will close at 1:30 PM Central and 2:30 PM Central, respectively.
Its cryptocurrency, energy, foreign exchange, metals markets, and EBS platform products will maintain normal hours.
An American Tradition
The stock market closures on Thursday are a longstanding practice of the NYSE and NASDAQ.
Both exchanges closed to mourn the deaths of recent presidents George H.W. Bush, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan.
Post Offices Closed, But Costco Open
The U.S. Postal Service will also suspend regular mail delivery and close all post office locations on January 9 to honor Carter.
All federal government executive departments and agencies will also be closed — that includes U.S. passport agencies and centers.
Those with passport appointments on January 9 should reschedule if they have not already.
Costco and other retailers that close on many federal holidays, will remain open.
The Orange Bowl remains on schedule for Thursday at 7:30 PM Eastern.
