The Houston Texans are up 10-6 in their wild card game against the Los Angeles Chargers — and quarterback C. J. Stroud is every reason why they’re on top.
The Texans got off to a slow start. They did not score until Stroud connected with wide receiver Nico Collins for a touchdown with 58 seconds to go in the second quarter.
But they put up 10 points in the final minute of the half. And Stroud led the offensive show.
Here’s how.
Stroud Recovers Fumble — And Launches a Missile
With 2:25 to go in the 2nd quarter, Stroud fumbled a snap that went through his fingers.
Undeterred, he ran back to the 3-yard line, coming dangerously close to safety territory, scooped up the ball, and connected with wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson on a 34-yard play, advancing the Texans all the way midfield.
The drive ended with Stroud’s touchdown pass to Collins.
Stroud Uses His Legs
The Texans quickly went back on offense after a Kamari Lassiter interception. Stroud then rushed for 27 yards — the longest of his career — on 2nd and 6 with 22 seconds to go in the half, advancing the Texans to within field goal range.
That set up a Ka’imi Fairbairn field goal, putting the Texans up 10-6 after going scoreless for the first 29 minutes of the game.
