The St. John’s Red Storm are New York’s hottest basketball team. Hotter than the red-hot New York Knicks.
And today, the 18-3 Johnnies, currently ranked 15th in the country, look to extend their seven-game winning streak and regain sole possession of first place in the Big East with a win over 11-10 Providence this afternoon.
A Key Big East Matchup for the Red Storm
The Red Storm are coming off a dominant win on Tuesday night in Washington after manhandling the Georgetown Hoyas, beating them by 25 points.
Providence has a winning streak of its own, having won its last two games against Georgetown and Seton Hall.
The Friars are managing without star forward Bryce Hopkins, who is out for the season with a torn ACL. The senior put up big numbers in his three games for Providence, but head coach Kim English said the big man needs to complete his rehabilitation and will redshirt the 2024-25 season.
Last Meeting: A Comeback Win for St. John’s
The Red Storm came back from a 16-point deficit in their previous matchup against the Friars on December 20 to win by two points.
In comments to the media after the loss, Providence’s English appeared to attribute the St. John’s win to hustle plays more than talent. He said, “They forced turnovers, they offensive rebounded, pretty much the only thing they do really well, and they did it.”
St. John’s enters this game with something to prove — and a higher-stakes matchup ahead of them. On Tuesday, they host Marquette at the Garden in their biggest game of the season.
The Red Storm and Golden Eagles are tied at the top of the Big East. Marquette, ranked ninth in the country, hosts the 15-6 Connecticut Huskies tonight.
