(7) Marquette faces (10) New Mexico tonight in what promises to be a tightly contested first-round matchup — and could mark another first-round win for the Pitino family.
Richard Pitino, son of St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino, has led the Lobos since 2021 and now has them in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.
This time, they might not be a one-and-done. Marquette is a strong team under head coach Shaka Smart, but they recently fell to Rick Pitino’s Red Storm in the Big East Tournament semifinals. Now, the Golden Eagles face the other Pitino — and there’s a real chance they could be sent packing once again.
There’s a good chance to Golden Eagles will be knocked out of this one by the younger Pitino.
