(6) Ole Miss takes on (2) Michigan State in the first of tonight’s Sweet 16 games.
So far, we haven’t seen an upset in this round of the NCAA Tournament. Could the Rebels be the first to break through?
Not so fast. Three key factors point toward a Michigan State victory.
First, the Spartans’ perimeter defense may be a difference-maker. Michigan State leads the nation in three-point defense, holding opponents to just 27.8% from beyond the arc. That’s bad news for Ole Miss, which has relied heavily on three-point shooting in its tournament run, hitting nearly 50% from deep in its recent wins.
Second, Michigan State is one of the top teams in the country in fast-break scoring. Their dominance on the boards, combined with Ole Miss’s struggles in rebounding, could lead to plenty of transition buckets tonight.
While this game may stay close, the Spartans’ edge in rebounding, transition offense, and perimeter defense gives them a strong advantage.
