Jayson Tatum has officially been ruled out of the 2025 NBA Playoffs.
The Boston Celtics announced this afternoon that Tatum underwent surgery today to repair a torn right Achilles tendon — a season-ending injury.
That eventuality seemed like a foregone conclusion after he was taken off the court with three minutes left in last night’s game against the New York Knicks in a wheelchair.
His rehab will be long and could extend well into, or possibly through, the entire 2025–26 season.
The prognosis for the Celtics is equally bleak. They now trail the Knicks 1–3 in their Eastern Conference Semifinals series, with Game 5 set for Wednesday night in Boston. Their playoff hopes are now on life support.
Jaylen Brown will be expected to shoulder the load, but he’s battling knee issues that appear to be limiting both his vertical explosiveness and outside shooting.
Even a healthy Brown might have struggled to carry the Celtics past a Knicks team that has cracked the code on Boston’s offense. New York has clawed back from double-digit deficits in each of their three wins this series. It hasn’t always been pretty, but the Knicks have found a way to finish — and that’s what counts.
In this series, New York has won three. Boston has won one. And now, without their leader, the Celtics’ playoff run is done.
