Daniil Medvedev plays No. 85 Adam Walton this afternoon in the Cincinnati Open second round, as the 29-year-old former world No. 1 looks to recapture his top form.
It’s been two years since the 2021 U.S. Open champion lifted a trophy. While there have been some bright spots in 2025 — such as a win over Alexander Zverev on grass in Halle, a semifinal run in Indian Wells, and a quarterfinal in Madrid — Medvedev, now ranked No. 14, has mostly fallen to opponents ranked in the teens and has seen early exits at Grand Slams.
It’s a sign that, after injuries and a period of tournament bans, he’s still trying to bridge the gap back to the game’s elite. This afternoon, we’ll see just how much ground Medvedev has gained — or still has to make up — against an opponent with nothing to lose.
Walton has earned spots in ATP main draws this season and recently claimed his first Challenger title at the Queensland International II in February 2025. He opened Cincinnati with a gritty comeback over Mariano Navone (4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1), showcasing his fighting spirit.
In 2025, Walton has tested himself against some of the game’s best, including Carlos Alcaraz, Andrey Rublev, and Taylor Fritz. All matches ending in defeats, but proving that Walton can trouble top-tier opponents — something Medvedev cannot afford to overlook today.
Walton–Medvedev Head-to-Head
This is the first match between Medvedev and Walton.
Prediction
Medvedev in straight sets. Walton has shown he can hang with elite players, but Medvedev’s experience, return game, and ability to absorb pace should keep him in control from start to finish.
