Alexander Zverev faces 20-year-old next-gen tennis talent Nishesh Basavareddy, tonight on center court in the Cincinnati Open second round.
After a decorated college career at Stanford, Basavareddy turned pro in late 2024, and began his 2025 campaign with an impressive Australian Open debut, taking a set off Novak Djokovic.
In Cincinnati, Basavareddy opened with a tough 7‑6, 7‑5 win over Aleksandar Vukic in the first round.
Cincy is familiar ground for Zverev. He won the title here in 2021, and has made multiple semifinal appearances. Given his trajectory in 2025, another semifinal run is likely. His 2025 campaign has been marked by deep runs, starting with the Australian Open, where he fell to Janik Sinner in the final in three sets.
A Grand Slam title has eluded Zverev. And that’s what separates him from Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner. Tonight, he aims to build the momentum for a title here in Cincinnati and later this month in New York.
Basavareddy–Zverev Head-to-Head
They have never met before. It will be Basavareddy’s first match against a top-three opponent at this level, though he has faced Djokovic once before.
Prediction
Zverev in 2 straight sets. His superior serve, baseline consistency, and experience at the highest level should overwhelm Basavareddy — but also provide him valuable lessons for the road ahead.
