The Boston Red Sox open a three-game road series against the Houston Astros tonight at Daikin Park.
These teams last met earlier this month, with Boston sweeping the series at Fenway. The Red Sox look to repeat their feat this week and end a two-game skid, as they find themselves four games behind the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays.
The Astros come into tonight’s game having helped the Sox by taking their weekend series with the third-place New York Yankees. But they enter a must-win stretch as the red-hot Seattle Mariners have won seven straight to close within half a game in the AL West race.
Houston’s playoff push gets a boost tonight with the return of starter Cristian Javier, making his first appearance of 2025 after Tommy John surgery. He’ll be on a pitch count as he builds back his workload, but the Astros will welcome the return of his high-spin fastball.
Boston counters with ace Garrett Crochet, who enters 13-4 with a 2.24 ERA. The strikeout machine has fanned 183 in 148.1 innings, with his sweeper doing much of the damage — generating a 38.3% whiff rate while holding hitters to a .122 average against it.
Red Sox-Astros Prediction
Javier is just working back into form, while Crochet is in the midst of a Cy Young-caliber season. Expect the Red Sox to get a few early runs off Javier, add on against the bullpen, and hold Houston to minimal damage.
Prediction: Red Sox 5, Astros 3
