The Philadelphia Phillies and the Miami Marlins conclude their three-game series tonight at Citizens Bank Park.
There’s little at stake in the finale for the Phillies, which have already secured both the NL East crown and a first-round bye after last night’s historic slugfest.
Meanwhile, the Marlins still have a narrow path to the postseason if they win tonight, sweep the New York Mets in their final three-game set, and have a few other things go their way.
On Wednesday, the Phillies routed the Marlins 11-1 behind a franchise-record eight home runs. Kyle Schwarber hit two of them, moving within two of Ryan Howard’s single-season team record of 58. Schwarber leads the NL with 56 home runs, but last night, it was Edmundo Sosa who led the way with three home runs.
Tonight, Walker Buehler gets the start for Philadelphia. Signed in late August after being released by the Boston Red Sox, Buehler has been a steal so far, going 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA in two September outings. He could play an important role as a reliever in the postseason or a fourth starter in a late-round series.
For the Marlins, Janson Junk takes the mound. He’s 6-3 with a 4.27 ERA on the season but has been inconsistent down the stretch. This month alone, he’s been roughed up by the Washington Nationals for six runs in 4.1 innings, but also showed flashes of brilliance by holding the Texas Rangers to one run over seven innings in his last start.
Prediction
Expect the Phillies’ power surge to continue. The third time may not be the charm for Buehler. Don’t expect his form to hold up. But Miami’s uneven pitching makes it hard to trust the Marlins to keep pace.
Prediction: Phillies 6, Marlins 4
