Football fans are gearing up for some prime-time NFL Draft Day drama centering on the future of Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders and his outspoken dad, NFL great Deion Sanders.
The current Colorado football head coach lashed out on social media on Monday, stating that “multiple idiots” are “say[ing] things that totally aren’t true” regarding his preferences for where Shedeur and his other son Shilo should play in the NFL.
Deion’s tweet may have been in response to a post by the “Wes Steinberg” parody account that claimed that Shedeur “has no interest in playing for” the Cleveland Browns or Tennessee Titans — presently positioned to select third and fourth, respectively, in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Deion’s Veto
Now, the speculation over Deion’s influence in the upcoming draft isn’t coming out of nowhere. In November, Deion said that he would “privately” step in if the wrong team drafts his son.
He made clear that he wants Shedeur to play for a team that “can handle the quarterback that he is” and “understand what he’s capable of.”
Deion also expects Shedeur’s future team to have a coaching staff that has “had success in the past handling quarterbacks” and simply won’t just throw his son “out there amongst the wolves.”
Shedeur’s future team’s infrastructure and prospects are very important to Deion. And his own tweet this week confirms that he could step in — and potentially even speak to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell directly.
Current Draft Position
This month, Deion proclaimed that Shedeur would be the No. 1 draft pick in 2025 — but that was when the New York Giants were positioned to select first. The Giants’ surprise victory in Week 17 over the Indianapolis Colts put them in a four-way tie for the worst record in the NFL, but positioned fourth in the 2025 draft, due to strength of schedule.
If the season ended today, the New England Patriots would select first, followed by the Browns, Titans, and the Giants. Given that the Patriots already have Drake Maye as their quarterback of the future, Shedeur and fellow standout quarterback Cam Ward could fall to second and third picks.
All this, of course, is speculation for now. The ultimate draft order will only become clear at the end of Week 18.
But what is clear is that when the dust settles, it’ll be prime time for the NFL’s Prime Dad.
