At a rally at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, Long Island, former President Donald Trump said he’d be the first Republican in decades to win the state of New York in the November presidential election.
Ronald Reagan was the last Republican to win New York in the general presidential election, doing so in 1984.
A Siena College poll in June showed Trump closing the gap with then-candidate President Joe Biden, with an increase in support from blacks and Jews.
Another Siena College poll taken after Biden dropped out of the race shows Trump leading over Vice President Kamala Harris in New York’s Long Island region, 50 percent to 44 percent. In that survey, conducted from July 28 to August 1, Trump unsurprisingly had a 14-point lead in Suffolk County, while trailing by three percent in Nassau County, where today’s rally is taking place.
In the Long Island poll, Trump leads not just with white Catholics and Protestants, but also Jews, besting Harris 59 to 41. Harris dominates with women of all races, non-whites, and voters in the 18 to 34 age group.
