The New York Giants‘ offseason has already begun. Topping their to-do list is securing a quarterback for next year.
None other than team co-owner John Mara made that declaration while speaking to the press earlier this week.
The team looked positioned to choose between Cam Ward of Miami and Shedeur Sanders of Colorado at number one in the 2025 NFL Draft, but lost command over the worst record in the NFL with their Week 17 win over the Indianapolis Colts.
Now the Giants are exploring a Plan B — and that includes Drew Allar, the standout Penn State quarterback who plays tonight in the Orange Bowl.
Why Drew Allar’s Draft Stock Is Rising
Allar has yet to declare for the draft. In fact, he informed Penn State in December that he intended to return for his senior year in 2025.
But those intentions could change based on his performance in tonight’s game. Of course, Allar’s priority tonight will be to secure a win to advance the Nittany Lions to the National Championship game. But he’s also got a lot of NFL scouts who’ll be watching him.
Dane Brugler of The Athletic says, “There are several NFL GMs who believe Allar could enter the 2025 NFL Draft with a strong playoff run” — especially with the paucity of high-quality quarterbacks in this draft.
The reason? Allar is a gunslinger. He’s got a rocket for an arm and his accuracy has improved this year. Tonight’s performance will be key for NFL scouts. They’ll be looking to see whether he’ll be able to hold up those gains in a high-pressure game.
Along with questions over accuracy, Allar — a big guy at 6’5″ and 230 lbs. — isn’t exactly the most nimble.
But many see the 20-year-old as having a huge upside. So the big question is where along that trajectory is he and whether he’s ready to make that big leap in 2025.
Allar has until January 24 to declare for the draft.
The Giants’ Plan C
The Giants select behind the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns in the 2025 draft — and both teams also need a quarterback. Allar entering the fray would add another premier quarterback talent to choose from.
There would be nothing stopping the Browns or Titans from choosing Allar, if he declares. In that case, the Giants could choose between whoever remains among Sanders or Ward.
The Giants could also look to the free agency market for a stopgap quarterback. Candidates include the Minnesota Vikings’ Sam Darnold, who entered the season as a placeholder for their 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy.
The Vikings could franchise Darnold, who is flourishing under the offensive system of head coach Kevin O’Connell to keep or deal him. Alternatively, they could also trade McCarthy.
For the Giants, trading for McCarthy, whom they passed on in 2024 — would come at a steep price.
