The New York Giants announced that they will retain head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen despite a disappointing 3-14 season.
Following speculation about potential changes at the top, many believed the franchise might opt for a full regime overhaul.
However, Giants ownership has expressed confidence in Daboll and Schoen, signaling a commitment to stability as they look to rebuild and improve in the coming season — including through the upcoming draft.
Both Daboll and Schoen are entering the fourth year of their five-year contracts.
John Mara Statement
Team president and co-owner John Mara released a statement this morning on behalf of himself and co-owner Steve Tisch:
“Now that our season is over, we felt it necessary to make this statement.
Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll will continue in their respective roles with the organization. As disappointing as the results of the season have been, Steve (Tisch) and I remain confident in the process that Joe and Brian have implemented and their vision for our team.
We look forward to the future and achieving the results we all desire.”
Mara Speaks to the Media
There are, however, indications that Daboll and Schoen may be on a short leash.
Speaking to the media on Monday, co-owner Mara was asked about his expectations for how long it will take to improve the Giants’ roster. He replied, “It better not take too long… because I’ve almost run out of patience.”
Mara’s frustration is understandable. Daboll holds an 18-32-1 record over three seasons as the Giants’ head coach.
After a promising 9-7-1 inaugural season in 2022, which included a playoff win before falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round, the Giants have since endured two consecutive losing seasons.
Daboll and the Quarterback Factor
Daboll built his reputation as a quarterback guru, and early on, it seemed that reputation might hold true with Daniel Jones. The Giants’ first-round pick in 2019 showed significant improvement in 2022. However, Jones regressed the following season — and so did the Giants.
With Jones now gone and the team could address its quarterback vacancy in the 2025 NFL Draft, should Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders remain available when the Giants pick at three.
If they draft Sanders or Ward, that would beget the question: Does retaining Daboll and Schoen now mean committing to them for the long-term development of a rookie quarterback?
When asked about that, Mara said, “I’m gonna have to be in a better mood this time next year than I am now.”
Mara has shown uncharacteristic patience with Daboll. The Giants saw four head coaches in the six years before Daboll joined the Giants in 2022. But while Daboll and Schoen live to see another year — if the Giants fail to change course, 2025 could be their last with the team.
