Superstar Juan Soto plays his first game for the New York Mets today in the spring training opener against the Houston Astros.
Mets fans will be eagerly anticipating Soto coming to the plate in his No. 22, acquired this week from teammate Brett Baty in exchange for a Chevy Tahoe.
Soto will be batting second, behind the leadoff hitter Francisco Lindor, and ahead of the returning Pete Alonso, who will be hitting third.
Mark Vientos and Brandon Nimmo, who will round out the top of the Mets’ Opening Day batting order, will not be in the lineup today. Nimmo battled through a plantar fasciitis injury during the Mets’ postseason run and began physical therapy during the offseason.
Altogether, the Mets’ 1-5 batters combined for 158 home runs last season — including Soto’s year with the Yankees.
An Ex-Yankee Reunion in Port St. Lucie
Soto won’t the only ex-Yankee playing for the Mets today. Former New York Yankees closer Clay Holmes will get the start today for the Amazins as he attempts to transition into a starting rotation role.
The Mets will need Holmes to be successful. Frankie Montas suffered a lat injury this spring and will be out for at least 6-8 weeks.
