MLB free agent Juan Soto has yet to sign his anticipated blockbuster contract, but he’s already getting paid.
The superstar took to Instagram to tease his 1 million-plus followers about that “announcement” they’ve “been waiting for.”
Soto posted a video styled like a press conference where fans expected him to announce his return to the New York Yankees or move to another team, like the New York Mets.
But it turned out to be something altogether different.
Soto’s Big Endorsement
Donning a navy blue blazer — a not-so-subtle nod to the Yankees — Soto said, “This was not an easy decision, but after meeting with the team, it’s become clear what I want to be.”
He then put on a cap and declared, “Team Celsius.”
An announcement for an energy drink — not a baseball team. Talk about a buzzkill.
Soto then took a sip from a Celsius can and quipped, “What? You were expecting a different announcement?”
Boras Means Business
Soto is clearly making the most of his free agency, monetizing the buzz surrounding his next big move. It’s a smart play for both the outfielder and the Celsius brand.
Clearly, Soto agent Scott Boras is leaving no stone unturned in maximizing his client’s earning potential, even through his social media presence — though such moves could irritate the fan bases of the teams who don’t end up signing the slugger.
Boras is believed to be seeking a $700 million deal for his client. However, it’s unclear whether such a figure is attainable. Perhaps the difference could be made up by selling energy drinks.
As for drinks, Soto’s suitors, which include not just the Mets and Yankees, but also the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Toronto Blue Jays, may need a stiffer one.
Whoever lands Soto will have to pay up for the generational talent. An energy drink might not be enough to steady their nerves.
