Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver tonight what her campaign describes is a “closing argument” by the former prosecutor in her bid for the presidency against former President Donald Trump.
The site of the address — the Ellipse in Washington, DC — is highly symbolic. It’s where then-President Trump incited insurrectionists to make their way to the Capitol building on January 6, 2021, to press for the overturning of the 2020 presidential election results. Trump falsely claimed that the election was rigged and called on those gathered at the Ellipse to “fight like hell.”
Thousands made their way to the Capitol building, with some armed with Molotov cocktails and wearing military-style gear with zip-ties in tow. The carnage resulted in as many as nine deaths and millions of dollars in damage. Rioters left the building littered with blood, feces, and other waste.
With this context in mind, Harris is likely to emphasize the themes of democracy versus authoritarianism, and order versus chaos.
