Former President Donald Trump proclaimed toward the end of today’s rally at Madison Square Garden that “the Republican Party has really become the party of inclusion.” But that moment was an anomaly in what was a theater of hate at the world’s most famous arena.
New York City is among the most diverse cities in the United States and the world. But diversity was largely relegated to the groups attacked and mocked: blacks, Puerto Ricans, and those of mixed race.
Here are the most racist moments at Donald Trump’s New York rally:
1. Puerto Rico Called a ‘Floating Island of Garbage’
An early speaker, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, set the tone for the event by describing Puerto Rico, the homeland of over a million voters in total in battleground states Florida and Pennsylvania, as “a floating island of garbage.”
2. Latinos Said to ‘Love Making Babies’
Hinchcliffe’s routine featured further jibes at Hispanics. His lowbrow ethnic humor included this quip: “And these Latinos, they love making babies too. Just know that.”
3. Tucker Carlson Calls Kamala Harris a ‘Samoan-Malaysian Low-IQ Former Prosecutor’
Talk show host Tucker Carlson mocked Vice President Kamala Harris’s mixed-race background with an inference to race and IQ — a subject popular with white nationalists.
4. Kamala Harris Describe as Having ‘Pimp Handlers’
Businessman Grant Cardone referred to Harris — a former prosecutor and state attorney general, and incumbent vice president — as “the least qualified” presidential candidate in history and said that she has “pimp handlers.”
5. A Black People and Watermelon Joke. Yes, Really.
Comedian Hinchcliffe noticed a black man in the audience and joked that together they had “carved watermelons” instead of pumpkins at a “Halloween party last night.”
