X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, experienced multiple outages on Monday, with owner Elon Musk describing the incident as a “massive cyberattack” — possibly originating from Ukraine. Musk did not provide substantiation for his claims.
In a post on X, Musk stated, “We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved.”
Later in the afternoon, he elaborated further during an appearance on Fox Business, alleging that the attack had been geolocated to Ukraine.
“Well, we’re not sure exactly what happened, but there was a massive cyberattack to try to bring down the X system, with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area,” Musk said in an interview with Larry Kudlow.
Musk has yet to provide evidence supporting his claim that a cyberattack caused the outages. In recent weeks, he has made multiple false statements in public, including false claims about U.S. funding for condoms in Gaza and the effectiveness of the Department of Government Efficiency, which he oversees.
Musk Has Been on the Offensive Against Ukraine’s Leader
The Tesla CEO has attacked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in recent weeks, supporting President Donald Trump’s confrontational approach toward the embattled leader.
Musk posted on X, “If Zelensky was actually loved by the people of Ukraine, he would hold an election. He knows he would lose in a landslide. So he canceled the election.”
Musk claimed that Zelensky “is despised by the people of Ukraine, which is why he has refused to hold an election.”
He added: “I challenge Zelensky to hold an election and refute this. He will not. President Trump is right to ignore him and solve for peace independent of the disgusting, massive graft machine feeding off the dead bodies of Ukrainian soldiers.”
Ina Holst-Pedersen Kvam, a Norway-based expert on the Russian military, argues that Musk’s claims about Ukraine are part of a “disinformation campaign” to discredit Ukraine and “justify future Starlink blackouts” and tilt the battlefield in Moscow’s favor.
The Ukrainian military relies on SpaceX’s Starlink for its communications. This weekend, Musk said Ukraine’s “entire front line” would collapse if he revoked its access to Starlink.
Meanwhile, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) stock closed down 15.43% — its worst single-day decline in five years.
