(2) Alabama takes on (7) Saint Mary’s tonight in a game the Crimson Tide are favored to win — but nothing is guaranteed in March.
The Gaels are coming off a narrow 59–56 win over Vanderbilt on Friday, led by their backcourt of Jaden Ross and Augustas Marciulionis — one of two Lithuanian starters on the team.
Saint Mary’s is one of the most consistent mid-majors in the country, but consistency hasn’t translated into deep tournament runs. Under head coach Randy Bennett, the Gaels have exited in the first or second round in nine of their ten NCAA Tournament appearances. This year looks likely to be more of the same.
That said, Alabama — like fellow SEC power Auburn — has shown signs of vulnerability. The Crimson Tide’s 90–81 win over 15th-seeded Robert Morris was much closer than expected. The Colonials stayed within striking distance for most of the game and even took the lead with 6:46 left in the second half. Alabama responded with an 11–1 run over the next 3:22, including seven points from team leader Mark Sears.
Sears finished with 22 points and 10 assists, and he’ll be key again tonight. Expect him to deliver and help Alabama avoid an upset, punching their ticket to the Sweet 16 to face BYU.
