Carlos Alcaraz begins his Cincinnati Open campaign tanned and rested. He meets No. 56 Damir Dzumhur this afternoon in the second round, having last competed this summer at Wimbledon.
Dzumhur has fought his way to this afternoon’s match, advancing through the qualifiers and posting a solid first-round win. His strong 2025 season includes multiple Challenger titles and a noteworthy run in Indian Wells.
The Bosnian’s best win of 2025 came against big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (then ranked No. 37) in the first round of Roland Garros. At Indian Wells, he pushed Frances Tiafoe in a tight straight-sets loss, falling 6-7(4), 6-7(7) in the second round.
Alcaraz enters Cincinnati with a season defined by consistency but short of the dominance he showed in 2023 and 2024. The 22-year-old has reached at least the semifinals in all three Grand Slams this year, winning his second straight Roland Garros title in June. He also claimed a Masters 1000 crown in Madrid and made finals in Miami and Indian Wells, falling both times to Jannik Sinner.
The world of tennis awaits another Alcaraz-Sinner final, both in Cincinnati and Flushing, where he’ll aim for a second title.
Cincinnati serves as both a tune-up and a proving ground for Alcaraz, who hasn’t lifted the trophy here and will look to reclaim momentum before the final major of the year.
Alcaraz–Dzumhur Head-to-Head
Alcaraz leads their head-to-head 2–0. That includes both their meeting at Roland Garros this year and a Challenger meeting in 2020 in Barcelona. Both matches were on clay.
Prediction
Alcaraz in 2 straight sets. It’ll be a smooth outing for the Spaniard, whose all-court game should comfortably absorb Dzumhur’s variety and control the match over two sets.
