Lucia Bronzetti faces Coco Gauff this morning in the Cincinnati Open Round of 16 to start Thursday’s action on Center Court.
The 26-year-old Bronzetti, ranked No. 61, has prevailed over her opponents thus far with gritty performances — most recently outlasting Zhu Lin in a marathon three-hour, 38-minute battle.
Her other two wins came in upsets over seeded players Daria Kasatkina and Jelena Ostapenko, each lasting over two hours. While Bronzetti’s composure, tactical variety, and hard-court touch make her a dangerous underdog, she has yet to defeat a top-10 player in her career.
Today, she faces not just a top-10 player, but the world No. 2.
Gauff enters in stronger form after a fourth-round exit at the Canadian Open to rising star Victoria Mboko. She’s also relatively well-rested, advancing past Dayana Yastremska via walkover before efficiently beating Wang Xinyu in just over an hour, 6-3, 6-2.
The winner will face either Jasmine Paolini or Barbora Krejcikova in the quarterfinals. If both Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka advance through the draw, they’ll meet in the final — a rematch of their Roland Garros showdown, where Gauff triumphed this summer.
