Top seed Coco Gauff returns to Centre Court tonight at the 2025 Canadian Open in Montreal to face the Canadian wildcard Victoria Mboko.
Mboko, who is just 18, has shown grit and determination in her maiden Canadian Open run, taking down the 23-seed Sofia Kenin in straight sets in the second round, and defeating Marie Bouzkova with a final golden set.
But she could not have asked for a more difficult opponent tonight. Gauff, the 2025 French Open winner, is in a category of her own, along with Aryna Sabalenka.
Yet Coco has shown vulnerability since securing the Roland Garros title. She lost to Dayana Yastremska in the Round of 128 at Wimbledon, and both of her Canadian Open matches so far have gone to three sets, with multiple tiebreakers, lasting between 2.5 to three hours.
Despite the first-round bye, it’s been a taxing tournament for Gauff. And it may be the perfect moment for Mboko to show the world just what she’s got.
Gauff-Mboko Head-to-Head
Gauff leads the head-to-head 1–0, courtesy of a three-set win over Mboko at the Italian Open earlier this year.
What to Expect
Mboko has impressed with her aggressive serving and counterpunching, despite some second-serve vulnerability.
Gauff will seek to exploit those weaknesses with deep returns and more consistent serving, though double faults have plagued her this week.
The match could hinge on Mboko’s ability to stay aggressive and Gauff’s capacity to limit mistakes.
Prediction
Gauff in three tight sets. Mboko will once again test Gauff and perhaps even take the first set. But Gauff will regain control and take the final two.
