The Los Angeles Dodgers look to stop the humiliation from the MLB’s worst teams as they face the Baltimore Orioles again tonight at Camden Yards.
The Dodgers have dropped four straight, including a sweep at the hands of the last-place Pittsburgh Pirates. After falling in last night’s opener against the Orioles, they’re now in danger of being swept by another division cellar-dweller.
Pitching wasn’t the issue in Game 1. Shohei Ohtani delivered 3.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts, and six relievers limited Baltimore to just two runs over the next five frames. But 21-year-old rookie catcher Samuel Basallo ended it with a walk-off homer off Tanner Scott. The Orioles’ bullpen outdueled the Dodgers, holding them to a single run.
Despite the slump, Los Angeles remains atop the NL West, helped by the San Diego Padres, who’ve lost five straight. But the cushion is shrinking.
The surging San Francisco Giants have won five straight to pull within six games, and the Arizona Diamondbacks — winners of seven of their last 10 — aren’t far behind either.
If the Padres heat up, the Dodgers could be dragged into a crowded Wild Card race, where they hold only a two-game edge over both the Padres and the New York Mets.
The Dodgers turn to Yoshinobu Yamamoto tonight to steady the ship. He’s been outstanding, posting an 11–8 record with a 2.82 ERA and coming off a seven-inning, one-run gem against Arizona.
But the Orioles’ starter, Trevor Rogers, has been even better. Rogers is 8–2 with a sparkling 1.39 ERA and has given up just one run across his last six starts. His only poor outing came back in June, and he’s been untouchable since.
Predictions
This matchup has the makings of a pitcher’s duel. Yamamoto gives Los Angeles a real chance to halt the slide, but Rogers’ dominance means Baltimore is more than capable of stealing another close one.
Prediction: Dodgers 3, Orioles 2
