The Los Angeles Dodgers look to avoid a second-straight series sweep at the hands of the MLB’s worst teams as they face the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon at Camden Yards.
Last night’s loss was one of the strangest of the season. Yoshinobu Yamamoto carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the ninth with two outs, only for Jackson Holliday to break it up with a solo home run.
Manager Dave Roberts pulled Yamamoto, and the bullpen imploded. Blake Treinen allowed a hit, hit a batter, and walked two to tie the game before Tanner Scott surrendered a walk-off single to Emmanuel Rivera.
The Dodgers, who were just swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates, have now lost five straight and seven of their last 10. They sit only one game ahead of the San Diego Padres, who have been just as bad over the same stretch.
With only weeks left in the season, the NL West could turn into a four-way race as the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks close in. Both teams have won eight of their last 10. San Francisco now sits six games back, while Arizona is 6.5 games behind the Dodgers. Simply put, Los Angeles needs to stop the skid now.
Clayton Kershaw takes the mound for the Dodgers. The veteran is 9–2 with a 3.28 ERA this season and was dominant in August (5–0, 1.88 ERA) before stumbling in his last outing, allowing four runs in five innings to the Pirates.
The Orioles hand the ball to Tomoyuki Sugano, who is 10–7 with a 4.41 ERA in his first MLB season. After a brutal summer (ERA over 6.00 in June and July), the 35-year-old righty from Japan has steadied somewhat, though he was shelled in his last start, giving up seven runs and 10 hits in just 3.1 innings against the surging Giants.
Predictions
Expect the Dodgers to snap their losing streak behind a strong outing from Kershaw. Sugano may limit Los Angeles at times, but the pressure on the Dodgers should finally break through.
Prediction: Dodgers 5, Orioles 3
