(1) Florida takes on (4) Maryland in the second of today’s Sweet 16 games as the West Regional heads to San Francisco. All eyes are on Derik Queen, whose heroic buzzer-beater off the glass lifted the Terrapins past Colorado State on Sunday.
Queen, a projected top-five pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, has a bright future ahead of him. But he’s focused on taking Maryland deeper into the tournament in what will likely be a one-and-done year for the freshman.
The Gators are also coming off a nail-biter, edging past UConn in a game that nearly saw the two-time defending NCAA champions pull off the upset. Many still see the SEC powerhouse Florida as a favorite to win it all, but the close call showed that they are far from invincible.
Senior Walter Clayton Jr. came up big, as he has all year for Florida, scoring 23 points. Alijah Martin added 18 in the Gators’ hard-fought win.
Statistically, Florida holds the edge in offensive efficiency and rebounding, while Maryland brings a top-tier defense and elite three-point shooting. If Florida can control the glass and limit turnovers, they’ll be tough to beat.
But if Queen and the Terrapins can slow the tempo and hit their outside shots, they have a real shot at pulling the upset.
