The ACC tournament kicks off in earnest this afternoon with a quarterfinal matchup between top-seeded Duke and 13th-seeded Georgia Tech.
The Yellow Jackets beat Virginia 66-60 in the second round for the first time since 2016, led by Duncan Powell’s 21-point performance.
The 6-foot-8 junior was instrumental in Georgia Tech’s victory, scoring 15 of his points in the second half—including nine straight—to help seal the win.
Virginia cut the deficit to two with less than a minute remaining, but Georgia Tech held on with clutch defensive stops.
Now, the Yellow Jackets face a formidable challenge in Cooper Flagg and Duke. The Blue Devils dominated their last meeting on December 21 in Atlanta, winning 82-56. Duke’s victory was a balanced effort, with four players scoring in double digits, led by Kon Knueppel’s 18 points.
Georgia Tech kept the game close in the first half, trailing by just five at the break, but Duke pulled away in the second half.
The winner of today’s game advances to the semifinals on Friday night.
