World No. 7 Taylor Fritz faces Jacob Fearnley in the 2026 Indian Wells tournament second round tonight.
The early part of Fritz’s 2026 season has produced mixed results. At the Australian Open, the American advanced to the fourth round with wins over Valentin Royer, Vit Kopřiva, and Stan Wawrinka before losing to Lorenzo Musetti.
He followed that with a much stronger run in Dallas. Fritz beat Brandon Nakashima in straight sets, edged Sebastian Korda in three sets, then defeated Marin Cilic in the semifinals to reach the final. There, he came within a point of the title but lost to Ben Shelton 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 after Shelton saved three championship points.
Even with that inconsistency, Fritz remains a dangerous player at Indian Wells. He has won the title here before, and his serve-plus-forehand game is a natural fit for the slower hard courts and high-bouncing conditions in the desert. The California setting also gives him a comfortable home-state atmosphere.
Fearnley, meanwhile, earned his spot in the second round with a composed 6-3, 6-3 win over Damir Dzumhur. He finished the match in 1 hour, 23 minutes, and struck six aces while controlling the action from the baseline.
The British player is still trying to establish himself consistently at this level. He entered Indian Wells with a 5-7 record in 2026, so the win over Dzumhur was an important one, both for confidence and for momentum heading into a much tougher matchup.
Fearnley-Fritz Head-to-Head
This is the first career meeting between Jacob Fearnley and Taylor Fritz.
Prediction
Fritz in straight sets. Fearnley may have moments of success early in rallies, but Fritz’s serve and forehand should control the match.
