Jannik Sinner faces Lorenzo Musetti in the 2025 U.S. Open quarterfinal in an all-Italian showdown under the lights at Arthur Ashe.
Sinner, of course, is an Italian in a league of his own, at least among his compatriots. The defending champion shares top standing in the sport with Carlos Alcaraz of Spain as part of its unofficial “Big Two,” though the 38-year-old Novak Djokovic reminds us in every match that he’s still very much part of the conversation.
In New York, Sinner has been in commanding form. After cruising through the first three rounds, he produced one of the most dominant displays of the tournament in the Round of 16, defeating Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.
Bublik was so humbled he might as well have dropped to his knees in a “we’re not worthy” bow straight out of Wayne’s World.
Musetti, seeded No. 10, has built his best-ever U.S. Open run with a mix of flair and resilience. Known for his elegant one-handed backhand, he navigated tough opponents in the early rounds and showed composure in pressure moments.
This is Musetti’s first hard-court Slam quarterfinal, and his variety and creativity have carried him into the second week.
Sinner–Musetti Head-to-Head
Sinner leads their head-to-head 2–0, winning in Antwerp (2021) and Monte Carlo (2023), both in straight sets. This will be their first meeting at a Grand Slam.
Prediction
Sinner in straight sets. Musetti’s shot-making and flair could make for entertaining rallies, but Sinner’s consistency, superior serve, and experience in the latter stages of majors should see him through comfortably. Expect Musetti to create highlight moments, but Sinner to control the match and advance in three sets.
