The Seattle Mariners (74–68) play the rubber game of their series with the Atlanta Braves (64–78) this afternoon at Truist Park, looking to build on last night’s offensive explosion.
Seattle’s bats broke out in a big way, piling up 10 runs on 11 hits, including five home runs.
Julio Rodríguez went deep twice to surpass the 30-homer mark for the second time in his career, continuing his September surge after hitting .321 with seven homers and 21 RBIs in August.
Cal Raleigh joined the parade, belting his 52nd homer of the season. He’s now just four shy of Ken Griffey Jr.’s franchise record of 56, set in both 1997 and 1998.
The victory was a needed boost for the Mariners, who had dropped seven of their last 10 and remain 3.5 games behind the AL West-leading Houston Astros.
Luis Castillo takes the mound for Seattle today. After a dominant July (4–1, 2.05 ERA), he has stumbled, allowing five or more runs in three of his past four starts while opponents hit .327 against him in August.
Spencer Strider was originally scheduled to get the start for Atlanta, but Joey Wentz will make the start instead. Like Strider, he’s struggled this year, coming in with a 5–5 record and 5.12 ERA. His return to the rotation this summer was rocky — and those troubles have continued into September. Wentz allowed four runs and seven hits in just four innings against the Chicago White Sox last week.
Predictions
With both starters struggling, another slugfest feels likely. The Mariners’ power advantage should carry them to a series win.
Prediction: Mariners 7, Braves 5
