The Phoenix Mercury (26–14) visit the Washington Mystics (16–25) tonight at CareFirst Arena for the first of their final four regular-season games.
Phoenix is hot, surging at the right time with five straight wins as they push for home-court advantage. They’re currently tied in third place with the even hotter Las Vegas Aces, who’ve won 12 in a row and face off against the Minnesota Lynx tonight in another must-see battle.
The Mercury’s core trio has found its rhythm, delivering a balanced attack. Alyssa Thomas, a triple-double machine, sets the tone, while Kahleah Copper and Satou Sabally provide equally vital production. The balance is striking: Sabally averages 16.5 points per game, while Copper and Thomas each contribute 16.0.
Phoenix is well-positioned to keep rolling, with three of its final four matchups against teams in the league’s bottom tier, including the Mystics.
Washington hovered near the final playoff spot for much of the season, failed to capitalize on the Indiana Fever’s collapse and the Seattle Storm’s mid-season struggles. Instead, the Mystics have dropped seven straight and are in free fall to close the season.
Still, there are promising signs — for next year. Rookies Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen have impressed. And while Citron has been the focus of many, Iriafen is putting up a strong close to the season. She posted 22 points and 13 rebounds in Sunday’s narrow loss to the Los Angeles Sparks.
This season is a wash for Washington. But they may make waves next year. As for Phoenix, their time is now.
Prediction
Expect the Mercury to set the tone early with offensive discipline and veteran structure. Washington’s defense and youthful energy may keep it competitive, but expect nothing short of a dominant win by Phoenix.
Prediction: Phoenix Mercury 81, Washington Mystics 70
