(5) Michigan takes on the formidable (1) Auburn in tonight’s third Sweet 16 game.
This is Auburn’s game to lose. The Tigers are an altogether superior team with a balanced top-tier offense, elite interior defense, and one of the top three-point defenses in the country, holding opponents to just 29.6% from beyond the arc.
But Michigan’s “Twin Towers” — Vlad Goldin (7’1″) and Danny Wolf (6’10”) — could make this game closer than expected if they’re able to contain Johni Broome, Auburn’s dominant big man and centerpiece in the paint on both ends of the floor.
On the defensive end, Auburn’s frontcourt could make up for its lack of towering height with relentless physicality and disciplined rim protection, making life difficult for Michigan in the paint. Despite the height of its frontcourt, Michigan only averages 3.6 blocks per game, compared to 6.0 for Auburn — the second highest in the NCAA.
With that combination of scoring prowess and gritty interior defense, Auburn is poised to win this one comfortably.
