The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres battle once again tonight, tied at the top of the NL West, with 40 games left in the season.
Both teams send heavyweights to the mound: Dylan Cease for the Padres, and Blake Snell for the Dodgers.
Cease has struggled to live up to ace status this year, posting a 5–10 record with a 4.52 ERA. Recently, though, he seems to have found his rhythm, allowing just 2 earned runs over his last 11 innings, with 16 strikeouts.
His two starts against the Dodgers this year were polar opposites. On June 10, he was utterly dominant: 7 shutout innings with 11 strikeouts (but 5 walks). A week later, he was shellacked by the Dodgers, allowing 6 earned runs over 5 innings, though he struck out nine.
Snell, meanwhile, has looked sharp since coming back from the IL. Over his two starts, he has racked up 18 strikeouts in 10 innings, generating plenty of swing-and-miss with his fastball-slider combination.
With Michael King returning to the IL with left knee inflammation, the Padres need Dylan Cease to prove his recent strong outings are more than just a fleeting glimpse of his former self.
Prediction
Expect another low-scoring game with Cease and Snell rising to the moment. The Dodgers take this one a gain by a single run.
Prediction: Dodgers 4 — Padres 3
