The Philadelphia Phillies and the Milwaukee Brewers wrap up their series with a rubber game this afternoon at American Family Field.
The Phillies dropped last night’s game 6–3 after Aaron Nola gave up six runs, five of them in the first inning. Philadelphia’s lineup chipped away with runs in the fifth and seventh but never managed to close the gap.
Combined with Taijuan Walker’s five-run outing on Monday, the back end of the Phillies’ rotation looks shaky — and Nola remains the weakest link.
This afternoon, the Phillies turn to Ranger Suárez. The left-hander has been steadier, though not without hiccups. He was tagged for five or more runs by the Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, and Los Angeles Angels over the past two months, but also shut down the New York Mets to one run in late July.
In his last three outings, Suárez has given up just three runs across 18.2 innings, showing signs of locking in when it matters most. He also limited Milwaukee to a single earned run over six innings in his only start against them this season.
Freddy Peralta gets the start for the Brewers. He’s putting together the best year of his career. The right-hander enters with a 16–5 record, a 2.58 ERA, and 168 strikeouts in 153.2 innings. Opponents are hitting just .192 against him.
Peralta makes his first start this September after an utterly dominant August in which he allowed only one run over 28 innings in five starts for a minuscule 0.32 ERA. Two of those outings were one-hit, scoreless gems.
The Phillies haven’t faced Peralta this season, but they’ll be up against a pitcher in peak form.
As for the divisional races, both teams remain in control: the Brewers lead the Chicago Cubs by six games after they too fell last night, while the Phillies hold a 5.5-game cushion over the Mets despite the loss to Milwaukee.
Predictions
Expect a pitcher’s duel, but Peralta’s recent dominance gives the Brewers the edge.
Prediction: Brewers 3, Phillies 2
