The Philadelphia Phillies (81–59) visit loanDepot Park tonight to face the Miami Marlins (65–75), looking to strengthen their grip on the NL East as the regular season winds down.
Philadelphia has been less than dominant lately, going 5–5 over their last 10 games. The bulk of those losses, however, came from being swept by the New York Mets in the early part of that stretch. Since then, the Phillies have bounced back with consecutive series wins over the Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers.
A victory in Miami would set them up well for next week’s crucial four-game showdown with the Mets in Flushing.
On the mound tonight is Cristopher Sánchez, who has been one of Philadelphia’s most reliable arms this season. The left-hander is 11–5 with a 2.66 ERA and 181 strikeouts across 169.1 innings.
Aside from one rough outing against the Mets in August, Sánchez has been outstanding since late May, including a six-start stretch in June and July where he allowed just one run per game. He already shut down the Marlins once this season, holding them to a single run over eight innings.
Miami sends right-hander Valente Bellozo (1–3, 3.91 ERA) to the mound tonight. Bellozo has had an up-and-down season, trending downward, with a 5.82 ERA in August. Bellozo began the season in the rotation before being sent to the bullpen. He’ll probably work more of a bulk role tonight.
Predictions
Expect the Phillies’ bats to jump on Bellozo early, giving Sánchez a comfortable cushion to work with.
Prediction: Phillies 7, Marlins 2
