Phillies vs. Marlins: Preview, Predictions, Where to Watch (9/7/25)

The Philadelphia Phillies look to complete the series sweep this afternoon against the Miami Marlins ahead of a pivotal four-game series against the New York Mets.

Philadelphia’s pitching staff has been outstanding over the past three games, holding the Marlins and Milwaukee Brewers to just five runs combined. Now the Phillies test the back end of their rotation to see if it’s ready for October baseball.

Taijuan Walker gets the start for Philadelphia. He opened August strong, allowing just three runs across 18.2 innings in his first three starts. Since then, though, he’s struggled, giving up nine runs on 17 hits over his past two outings against playoff-caliber lineups in the Mets and Brewers.

Facing a more modest Miami offense, Philadelphia needs Walker to regain his form with the postseason approaching.

The Phillies hold a seven-game lead over the Mets in the NL East, a cushion they could stretch to eight with a win today and a Mets loss. Securing the upcoming head-to-head series against New York could all but lock up the division title.

Still, as last year showed, a division crown doesn’t guarantee a deep playoff run. With Zack Wheeler sidelined, Philadelphia needs its rotation depth to step up if they want a shot at the World Series.

For Miami, Tyler Phillips will serve as today’s opener. The right-hander is 2–1 with a 3.15 ERA and won’t go beyond two innings. That puts pressure on the Marlins’ bullpen, giving the Phillies bats a prime opportunity to strike early and often.

Walker steadies himself with five solid innings, the bullpen closes it out, and Philadelphia heads into the Mets series with momentum.
