The Toronto Blue Jays host the Texas Rangers tonight to open a three-game home series.
Texas remains in the AL wild-card hunt, but will need to get hot soon or they’ll run out of time. The Rangers sit 3.5 games behind the New York Yankees for the final wild-card spot, with the Cleveland Guardians just a half-game back of the slumping Bronx Bombers.
The Blue Jays, meanwhile, are cruising atop the AL East with a five-game lead over the Boston Red Sox and a 6.5-game cushion over New York. The offense is firing on all cylinders — $500-million man Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is hitting .375 over his last 26 games with eight home runs and 21 RBIs, while Bo Bichette is batting .336 over the same stretch.
Chris Bassitt takes the mound for Toronto. He’s 11–6 with a 4.17 ERA and 128 strikeouts over 133.2 innings. After a stellar April in which he posted a 2.86 ERA, Bassitt has struggled since May, including a rough outing against the Baltimore Orioles last month, where he gave up six runs in just 2.1 innings. His last start against the Los Angeles Dodgers was also short-lived, allowing three earned runs on six hits in 4.2 innings.
Texas counters with ace Jacob deGrom, who at 37 is still putting up elite numbers. He’s 10–5 with a 2.86 ERA, though he’s posted a 4.73 ERA over his last seven starts — inflated by back-to-back rough games in which he surrendered five runs in five innings each. The Rangers will need him to shut down Toronto’s hot bats, as their own offense offers little support. Texas’s .232 team batting average ranks third-worst in the majors.
Rangers-Blue Jays Prediction
Expect a tight, low-scoring contest, with the Rangers eking out a win behind a strong deGrom performance.
