The Colorado Rockies (40–104) head out to Dodger Stadium tonight to face the Los Angeles Dodgers (79–64).
In a typical season, a matchup with the Rockies wouldn’t trouble Los Angeles, with 40 games separating the two clubs in the loss column. But 2025 has been anything but typical for the Dodgers.
Baseball’s supposed super team was recently swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates and then dropped two of three to the Baltimore Orioles. Strangely, it’s been the league’s worst teams that have given them the most trouble.
And few teams have been worse than Colorado. The Rockies own MLB’s lowest winning percentage at .280, losing more than seven out of every 10 games. Yet, when they last faced the Dodgers, Colorado managed to split a four-game series. The Rockies can be tricky, with a young lineup led by Hunter Goodman (.284, 29 HR, 86 RBIs) and rookie bats like Warming Bernabel.
The Dodgers can’t afford to slip now. They hold just a one-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the NL West, and the NL Wild Card race remains tight with the Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, and St. Louis Cardinals all chasing the New York Mets for the final spot.
Los Angeles has little cushion for a September slump. They need wins.
Tonight presents a favorable matchup. Rockies starter Chase Dollander (2–12, 6.77 ERA) has endured a brutal year, going 0–4 with an 8.22 ERA over his last seven outings. In his last appearance against the Dodgers, he surrendered seven runs and nine hits in just 3.2 innings. Expect Los Angeles to attack him early.
Tyler Glasnow gets the ball for the Dodgers. The right-hander is 1–3 with a 3.41 ERA over 14 starts, but has averaged fewer than five innings per outing this season. He has stretched closer to six innings since August, but if the Dodgers’ offense doesn’t jump on Dollander quickly, their bullpen could again be tested.
Predictions
The Dodgers’ bats should find plenty of success against Dollander, while Glasnow provides enough stability to get them back on track. Look for Los Angeles to snap out of their funk with a win at home.
Prediction: Dodgers 7, Rockies 4
