The Los Angeles Sparks (19–20) travel to College Park, GA, tonight to face the Atlanta Dream (26–14) at Gateway Center Arena in a late-season battle with playoff implications.
The Dream have already secured a spot in the postseason. But they’re in a three-way tie with the Las Vegas Aces and Phoenix Mercury for the second-best record in the league. For Atlanta, tonight’s game is about securing a higher playoff seed and an easier first-round matchup, while securing home-field advantage.
The Sparks, however, are simply looking to keep their postseason hopes alive. They sit in ninth place, just two games behind the eighth-place Indiana Fever in the win column. L.A. will need to keep on winning — and hope that the Fever, who’ve dropped two straight, continue to lose.
While Indiana may do its part, the Sparks have a tough task ahead of them. This is the first of two back-to-back games they play against the Dream. Two of the Sparks’ other three remaining games are against the Mercury and the Aces.
The Sparks have momentum coming into their final stretch, having won their last two, including a comeback win against the Seattle Storm on Monday, with Dearica Hamby and Rickea Jackson combining for 50 points. Along with MVP candidate Kelsey Plum, they form a formidable offensive trio.
The Dream, for their part, boast strength and balance on both ends of the court, led by their own trio of Allisha Gray, Rhyne Howard, and Brionna Jones.
Prediction
Atlanta has the edge here tonight, but L.A. could take this one if Gray is out.
Prediction: Atlanta Dream 88, Los Angeles Sparks 83 (if Gray plays); Los Angeles Sparks 86, Atlanta Dream 79 (if Gray is out)
