The big moment is here. St. John’s is playing Creighton for a shot at its first Big East Tournament title in 25 years.
It’s been a long, hard slog for the Johnnies, who faded into irrelevance over the 2000s and 2010s. Their misfortune mirrored that of another hometown favorite — the New York Knicks — and the overall decline in New York’s relevance to the world of basketball.
But head coach Rick Pitino’s arrival last year quickly turned things around. The speed of the turnaround has, of course, been enabled by millions in NIL money from billionaire alum Mike Repole, which has helped secure talent from the transfer portal like Kadary Richmond.
Creighton too has a story to tell. The program is making its fourth Big East finals appearance since joining the conference in 2013. It’s yet to win the tournament, but it’s made its presence felt in the Big Dance.
Since joining the Big East in 2013, the Bluejays have made the NCAA Tournament nine times, including three Sweet 16 appearances and an Elite Eight run in 2023.
Tonight, Creighton wants to send a message: the Big East is ours.
