The Connecticut Sun (11–31) head to Gateway Center Arena to face the Atlanta Dream (28–14) tonight in the first of back-to-back games to close out the regular season between these two teams on opposite ends of the standings.
The Dream are tied with the Las Vegas Aces for the second-best record in the league. Both teams have been red hot — Las Vegas has won 14 straight, while Atlanta has taken four in a row and seven of its last ten.
The seeding race matters: finishing second would likely mean a first-round matchup with the short-handed Indiana Fever, while slipping to third could bring a tougher opponent like the Golden State Valkyries.
For tonight, however, the Dream have little to worry about. The Sun have long been eliminated from playoff contention. And while they are coming off an upset win over the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday, but will be without rookie Leila Lacan, who is out for personal reasons.
Lacan scored six points in the final 30 seconds to secure that victory, while Tina Charles and Marina Mabrey led the way with 20-plus-point nights. Connecticut will still bring effort, but their focus is already on developing young talents like Lacan and Saniya Rivers for the future.
Atlanta, meanwhile, possesses one of the league’s deepest cores. Allisha Gray, Rhyne Howard, and Brionna Jones headline the attack, and the return of Jordin Canada has given the Dream a defensive stopper and floor general who raises their ceiling even higher.
Prediction
Expect Atlanta’s balance and depth to overwhelm a shorthanded Connecticut squad. The Sun can compete in stretches, but without Lacan and against a Dream team peaking at the right time, they’re outmatched.
Prediction: Atlanta Dream 90, Connecticut Sun 76
