(3) Texas Tech and (1) Florida kick off the Elite Eight as the two teams face off in the West Regional Final at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
The Red Raiders, the underdogs here, are coming off a thrilling comeback win over Arkansas in overtime in the Sweet 16 on Thursday. It was a close call for Texas Tech, with the Razorbacks leading by as much as 16 points. But behind a gritty defensive effort and clutch late-game shooting, Tech clawed its way back to secure the win.
The Gators, too, have had their moments of vulnerability in this NCAA Tournament. They narrowly escaped the Round of 32 against defending national champion UConn in what was one of the most tightly contested games of the tournament so far. Despite their close calls, Florida has looked like the most complete team remaining — efficient on offense and suffocating on defense.
The Gators followed the close call with UConn with a dominant win over Maryland — a formidable team — with six players scoring in the double digits.
We’ve yet to see a No. 1 seed bow out in this year’s March Madness, and while that could change before the weekend is over, don’t expect Florida to be the one sent packing.
Expect the Gators to come out on top in this matchup, powered by their deep bench, relentless rebounding, and a defense that has held opponents to 29.3% from beyond the arc.
If their backcourt plays with the same composure they’ve shown all tournament, Florida should be punching their ticket to the Final Four by Saturday afternoon.
