The Seattle Storm host the Golden State Valkyries tonight at Climate Pledge Arena in their regular-season finale, with a chance to clinch the final WNBA playoff spot.
Seattle enters the night 1.5 games ahead of the ninth-place Los Angeles Sparks, who play the second of their last two games tonight.
Los Angeles needs a Seattle loss tonight to stay alive, and it also needs to win its final two games — against the Phoenix Mercury tonight and the surging Las Vegas Aces on Thursday. It’s an uphill task for the Sparks, putting the odds in the Storm’s favor, even if they don’t win tonight.
For the Valkyries, a playoff berth is already secured in their inaugural season, but they still have plenty on the line.
Currently sitting in fourth, Golden State could climb as high as fifth or slip to eighth depending on the week’s results. That makes this matchup critical as they aim to avoid a daunting first-round series against the Minnesota Lynx or Atlanta Dream.
Tonight, the Storm will lean on Nneka Ogwumike’s work on the glass and Gabby Williams’ disruptive defense as they fight to clinch the final playoff berth. They’ll also need Skylar Diggins to set the tone offensively and Ezi Magbegor to control the paint.
Golden State, anchored by one of the league’s stingiest defenses, will turn to Veronica Burton’s playmaking along with the steady production of Iliana Rupert and Janelle Salaun to spoil Seattle’s postseason push and perhaps let the Sparks live to see another day.
Prediction
This one could go down to the wire, but Seattle’s playoff desperation and home environment may tip the scale. Expect a competitive matchup with the Storm edging out the Valkyries late.
Prediction: Seattle Storm 82, Golden State Valkyries 78
