The New York Yankees look to avoid another debacle tonight in the second game of their three-game series against the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium.
Last night, the Yankees jumped out early with Aaron Judge’s 44th home run of the season in the first inning, followed by a Cody Bellinger solo shot in the fourth for a 2–0 lead.
But the Tigers tied the game in the fifth and then broke it open in the seventh, scoring seven runs off reliever Fernando Cruz. Starter Will Warren had delivered six strong innings of two-run ball, but the bullpen collapsed yet again, surrendering 10 runs overall.
Offensively, the Yankees mustered little beyond those two home runs, collecting just two additional hits on the night. With the Toronto Blue Jays win, the Yankees slipped to three games back in the AL East and remain effectively tied with the Boston Red Sox for the Wild Card lead.
They’ll look to get back on track behind Carlos Rodón (16–7, 3.12 ERA), who has regained ace form down the stretch. Over his last seven starts, Rodón is 5–0 with a 2.90 ERA, allowing no more than two runs in six straight outings against top-tier opponents like Boston and the Houston Astros. The big question is whether the bullpen can avoid undoing another quality start.
The Yankee bats will try to capitalize against Detroit’s struggling starter Jack Flaherty (7–13, 4.85 ERA). Over his last 15 games, Flaherty has posted a 2–7 record with a 6.21 ERA, including three August outings where he allowed at least five earned runs. His lone start against New York back in April was a different story, however, when he tossed 5.1 scoreless innings.
Predictions
Rodón has been steady in September, and the Yankees’ offense should do just enough damage against Flaherty. The caveat, of course, is whether the bullpen can hold the line after Rodón exits.
Prediction: Yankees 4, Tigers 3
